Ancient and contemporary 'love'
For a project I am momentarily working on Ovid's text Pygmalion from his Metamorphosis. From a feminist perspective this story is somewhat out of bounds and to me it is a challenge to work on it.
(If you continue to read and follow the links you will stumble into some adult material, so don't say I didn't warn you.)
And looking for contemporary examples I did not only find management books speaking of the Pygmalion effect, but I also stumbled over a modern version of the story; there is one company making real size real-to-life dolls. Someone is actually putting effort in these dolls to make them appear 'alive'.
Compared to this the way Ovid put this story to words is very decent.

It's all there

Still from Ballet MechaniqueBack in June I went to a concert "London Sinfonietta meets Warp" where modern music was played next to (boom-boom) dance like music. London Sinfonietta played Ballet Mechanique together with a stunning 1924 film by Fernand Leger.
I found out that this film is online on ubuweb. This website has a great collection of art that once was burning red HOT.
Whether you like films from Yoko Ono, Joris Ivens, Man Ray or Edgard Varêse and Le Corbusier. And it isn't only films they have, but audio, writings, the whole LOT.
Awesome!

Undead music
American critic Greg Sandow started - what he calls - performing a book on his artsjournal blog, dealing with the downfall of classical music and what to do about it.
One of the things he does is comparing classical music institutions with theatre, where most of the plays performed are written by contemporary playwrights.
Do we see many contemporary composers address the needs of the audience? Do we see orchestras playing a majority of the music by contemporary composers?
No, we don't.
Since this issue is kind of global I am going to follow Sandows writings like a shadow. Most probably there are some new insights to be gained here.

Official Ostrava Days photo's
Today the office of Ostrava Days published photo's of the institute, rehearsals and festival. And, as should, they also published some photo's of the people behind the scenes who made it all work!
