Exit

Imagine a device capable of extracting sounds embedded within the very stones of old buildings. What began as an April Fools’ joke now forms the intriguing foundation for the composition Ghost Wall. Therefore, join us on a sonic journey where past and present converge.

From Prank to Musical Reality

The genesis of Ghost Wall stems from a clever April Fools’ prank: the invention of a peculiar instrument. This device would ostensibly make it possible to hear sound vibrations captured within the ancient masonry of structures. Envision walls acting like a phonograph record, holding conversations or songs from centuries past. It sounded preposterous, and indeed, on April 1st, it was revealed to be a joke.

A Device That Truly Exists… in Music

However, within the rich soundscape of the composition Ghost Wall, this fictitious device becomes a reality. The music transports listeners on a journey back in time, to places where, for instance, the compositions of Adriaan Willaert first resonated. The experience is both evocative and mysterious: does the gravestone of a church tomb slide open, or does it close? That remains open to the listener’s imagination.

About the Performance and Commission

Furthermore, Ghost Wall was specifically commissioned by the renowned recorder quartet Brisk. This project also received valuable support from the Netherlands Fund for Performing Arts. During performances, Brisk combines their instrumental artistry with captivating live electronics, which further enhances the atmospheric journey of ‘Ghost Wall’.
