Who in the Netherlands didn’t grow up with the children’s song Daar was laatst een meisje loos? According to the traditional lyrics of this song, this girl truly had no idea what her purpose on Earth was. In any case, she certainly didn’t want something that, according to the norms of that time, was considered suitable for girls: to go to sea. She was ‘loos’ – The Captain’s Calling.

In Loos, however, a short composition by Renske Vrolijk, we encounter a fundamentally different narrative. This piece reinterprets the familiar story, introducing a girl with clear resolve: she desires to go to sea, and decidedly not merely as a cabin boy. Her ambition extends further; she aims to be a captain. The composition thus offers a contemporary, feminist perspective on this classic tale.

All aboard and anchors aweigh: Splendor’s newest members are joining forces for their very first concert together! 

Loos will be premiered on June 25, 2025, during a concert at Splendor Amsterdam, where five new Splendor musicians presented themselves to the public. The theme of this concert was ‘The Sea’, specifically chosen in connection with Sail Amsterdam this year. Loos is Renske Vrolijk’s contribution of as one of the new Splendori.
